The Challenge: Secondary education in Tanzania is not yet free. At the end of primary school, every child sits a leaving exam. Those who pass are offered places in government secondary schools which, although fee-paying, are cheap compared to private schools. For those who don’t pass, private school is the only remaining option, but is beyond the reach of all but the wealthiest families. The standard of teaching in many primary schools is still under-par. That is why families which can afford it send their children to private tuiton. However, the majority of families can’t afford this.
KCC’s Solution: To offer free tuition to all children in Kigamboni whose parents can’t afford to pay for private tuition, in order to maximize the number of children able to pass their leaving exam and gain a place in a government secondary school.
