The Challenge: Secondary education in Tanzania is not yet free. At the end of primary school, every child sits for the final exam. Those who pass, are offered position in government secondary schools in which fee-paying is cheaper compared to private schools. For those who don’t pass, private school is the only remaining option and it is beyond the reach many. Only those from the wealthiest families can afford to take it. The standard of teaching in many primary schools is still under-par. That is why only families which can afford paying for their children for further studies send their children to private tuiton. However, the majority of families can’t afford this.
KCC’s Solution: To offer free tuition to all children in Kigamboni whose parents can’t afford to pay for private tuition, in order to maximize the number of children that will be able to pass their leaving exam and gain a position in a government secondary school.
