The Kigamboni Community Centre KCC

The Challenge: In 2011, UNICEF estimated that there are more than 3,000 children living on the streets in Dar es Salaam, and the number is increasing year on year. Whilst a number of organizations are working hard to address this complex issue, there are insufficient programmes in place to address both the symptoms and the root causes of this problem.

KCC’s Solution: With some of our founding members having lived on the streets as children themselves, this has always been an issue close to our heart. Since beginning our project, we have been inviting children living on the streets to come to the centre. We are providing a safe place to come, somewhere to wash their clothes, activities to get involved with and informal counseling with the aim of helping them to change their situations. Over the years we have had a number of successes with individual children as a result of family tracing and/or finding more permanent accommodation for those unable to return home. In 2012, we formalised and enhanced our efforts through a homeless shelter programme. You can find more information about the KCC Shelter here.
