The Challenge: Nursery Education in Tanzania is not free and many families can’t afford to send their children to a private or governmental nursery school. This causes two problems:

- Children who don’t attend nursery school are at higher risk of beginning primary school with a disadvantage at developing their literacy and learning skills
- Whilst every child registering for primary school before the age of 7 is legally entitled to a school position, oversubscribed schools will often give priority to children who have attended nursery school. Children who haven’t been attending nursery education often find themselves having to walk or travel far to reach the school which offers them a place
KCC’s Solution: KCC provides a free nursery programme to children whose parents can’t afford to pay for private education or government school.
