The Kigamboni Community Centre KCC

Volunteer with Us

KCC’s philosophy since the beginning has been “if you have a skill, come and share it”, and as a result of this, everything that KCC has achieved so far can be attributed to the fantastic work of the volunteers here at the Centre. We are always delighted to welcome new volunteers to the team, both local and international. We provide a wide range of activities and opportunities to the community, and the wonderful thing is that whatever your skill or talent, it is likely there is a place for you here at KCC!

Volunteer placements can be arranged for any amount of time; from a few hours on a specific day, to a 1 or 2 week placement during your travels, to even 6 to 12 months full or part-time. Other opportunities include visiting KCC to deliver a one-time or series of workshops on a specific skill or talent. So if you’re looking to expand your horizons, make a concrete and measurable difference to a community in need, or simply to include socially responsible travel in your next vacation plans, we’d love to hear from you!!

KCC Organizational Development

Organizational Development

KCC also has opportunities for skilled volunteers to come and work with the Office Team which looks after the day to day management and development of KCC. Areas of expertise welcome:

  • Fundraising
  • Communications
  • Marketing
  • Finance
  • Project Management
  • Strategic Development
  • Skills Training
  • General Administration

Given the scope of KCC’s activities and the scale of our future ambition, there is no shortage of work to do (!), and roles for Administrative Team members are designed based on their individual skills, experience, and areas of interest.

The KCC office is located in the middle of the Community Centre and all team members are very actively involved in the other activities. It’s a long way from your typical “office job!”

How can I join the team?

Very simple, first have a look at the current opportunities, see if there is anything complying to your interest and skills and then drop us an email at or a call at +255(0)753 226 662

How much will it cost?

In addition to being able to meet your own personal costs while in Tanzania (accommodation, travel, etc), KCC asks its volunteers to pay a small contribution to the organisation to cover administrative costs and to help with the daily running of the centre. The charges are currently as follows:

Duration Amount
Week 1 – 3 Tsh 250,000
Week 4 – 12 Tsh 350,000
Week 12 – 24 Tsh 550,000
Week 24 – year Tsh 650,000

We have extremely limited resources, and unfortunately we are therefore currently unable to help with living costs for any of our volunteers, local or international. However, we would be very happy to help you determine WHERE you would like to live by providing you with options to meet your wants and needs, and by helping you arrange your living quarters before you arrive! See the next section “Where would I live?” for more information.

Where would I live?

The simple answer is, wherever you would like to. We want you to be happy here, so it is important to us that you are able to choose where you would like to stay. For some people, living in the community is an important part of their experience. Others prefer to stay at one of the local beach lodges overlooking the Indian Ocean. The 5 most common options are:

  • Live with the community in a homestay. If you want to get a taste of what life is like for us Kigamboni locals, you might like to live with us in a homestay. You would have a simply furnished room with bed, bedding, and mosquito net and all meals provided. Living with a homestay family costs Tsh 100,000 per week.
  • KCC Shelter. KCC operates a shelter as part of the Street Children Rehabilitation programme. We rent out a house for the children to live in and have 2 rooms that volunteers may stay in if they would like to help out in the shelter and interact with the children. The rent from the rooms goes directly towards supporting the shelter. Current rates are at TSh 200,000 per month without food, and Tsh 100,000 per week with food.
  • Live in a lodge in Kigamboni. For those wishing to be in the community but who like their creature comforts, there are a couple of lodges where you can stay. Rooms have ensuite bathrooms, and breakfast is normally included in the room rate. Rates are currently around TSh 25 000 per night and up.
  • Live in a lodge by the beach. The Indian Ocean is about a 10 minute walk from KCC. If you like the idea of staying on the beach, there are a couple of tourist lodges where you can do so. Rates vary from TSh 14,000 for a camping spot to TSh 45,000 per night for a banda.
  • Rent your own house in Kigamboni. If you’re planning on staying for 6 months or longer, you may wish to rent your own house. Rents for a simple unfurnished room with communal toilet may be as little as TSh 50,000 per month. If you would like to do this let us know beforehand so we can help you find a place.

What standard of living can I expect?

Again, your standard of living is very much up to you. If you are living at the tourist lodges you can expect a fairly westernised standard of living. If you live in the community, you can expect a much more basic standard of living. If you live at one of the Kigamboni lodges, you can expect something in between.

What kinds of things do I need to think about in terms of costs?

This isn’t a full list by any means, but some of the things you will need to think about include:

  • Transportation to Dar es Salaam (once there, we’ll come meet you!)
  • Visa
  • Medical insurance (medical treatment is available but can be expensive)
  • Accommodation
  • Food
  • Internet access (we have limited internet access at the Community Centre)
  • Trips to other parts of Tanzania. Tanzania is a beautiful country so you may well like to take some time while you are here to travel to different parts of the country, go on safari etc. There is also a direct ferry from Dar es Salaam to Zanzibar.

What about visas for Tanzania?

You will need to research whether or not you need a visa for Tanzania, as there are different rules for residents of different countries. Most people can obtain a 3-month tourist visa fairly easily. If you would like to volunteer with us for more than 3 months, please let us know early and we will find out what we need to do to support your application.

Don’t hesitate to contact us for more information!
